Import your existing maps into Carta Volta

Do you already have places saved in another app and want to publish them on Carta Volta? This guide explains how to export your places from popular platforms and import them into Carta Volta.

Export from Google Maps

To export your saved places from Google Maps, visit takeout.google.com on your laptop. Make sure you log in with the same Google account you use to save places in Google Maps. Click 'Deselect all', find and select 'Saved' (1 of 68 selected) and scroll to the bottom to click on 'Next step'.

Prepare the export with the following settings and click 'Create export'.

  • Transfer to: Send download link via email
  • Frequency: Export once
  • File Type: .zip
  • File Size: 2GB

You will receive two emails from Google. The first one confirms your request (“Archive of Google data requested”). The second one can be delayed, but this email (“Your Google data is ready to download”) contains the download link to your saved places.

Click 'Manage Google Takeout request', then click 'Download'. Before you can download the file, you'll need to verify your account. Once verified, a zip file (takeout.zip) will be saved to your computer. Open the zip file to access the Takeout folder. Inside, there's a folder 'Saved', confirming you exported all your saved places. Here, you'll find all your lists as CSV files.

Export from Google My Maps

Open the Google My Maps you want to export on your laptop. In the top left corner, click on the menu (3 dots, next to the map title) and select 'Export to KML/KMZ'. A pop-up appears. Keep default settings (Entire map, checkboxes unchecked), then click 'Download' to save the KMZ file to your computer.

Export from Mapstr

In Mapstr (mobile app), go to 'My Profile' in the bottom right corner, scroll down to 'Export Data' and click it. A pop-up confirms that the data was emailed to you. You'll find the data attached to this email as a ZIP file.

Import to Carta Volta

Because the Carta Volta map editor is still under construction, the only way to add your places for now is to send the import file(s) to maps@cartavolta.com, and we'll pick them up from there. Only send us the export files of lists, maps, trips... you want to add to Carta Volta. An improved, more user-friendly process will be available when the editor is ready, expected in January 2026.

  • Google Maps: CSV file/list
  • Google My Maps: KMZ file/map
  • Mapstr: ZIP file (all pins)
